Privacy Policy
My California ADU (mycaliforniaadu.com) Effective date: October 16, 2026 Last updated: October 16, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information Nicole Cappelletti, an individual ("we," "us," "our"), collects through My California ADU (mycaliforniaadu.com) at https://mycaliforniaadu.com (the "Service"), and how we use it.
Short version: To make and send your ADU research Report, we ask for only two things: a property address and your email address. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for targeted advertising. We send your name, email, and address to local ADU contractors only if you check a separate, optional box asking for free quotes, and we send you a newsletter only if you check a separate, optional box. You can withdraw either choice, or ask us to delete your information, at any time.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Property address you enter | To look up public rules and parcel data and generate your Report |
| Email address | To send you your Report and, if needed, respond to you about it; and, only if you opt in, to send the newsletter and/or pass to contractors for quotes |
| Name (only if you opt in to contractor quotes) | So contractors you asked to hear from know who to contact |
| Your opt-in choices (newsletter yes/no, contractor quotes yes/no, with date/time) | To honor your choices and keep a record of your consent |
We do not ask for your phone number, phone number, payment information, Social Security number, or other sensitive information. Please do not include any in the form.
Note: a property address combined with an email address can identify you, so we treat both as personal information.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, our hosting provider and servers automatically receive limited technical information, such as IP address, browser type, device type, and the date and time of your visit. We use this only to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the Service (for example, to prevent abuse).
We use Vercel Web Analytics to understand overall site usage. It is cookieless, with no advertising features and no cross-site ad tracking. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking pixels.
Do Not Track / Global Privacy Control. Because we do not sell or share personal information or track you across other websites, we do not change our practices in response to browser "Do Not Track" signals. We do honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals as a request to opt out of any selling or sharing — though we do not do either.
2. How we use information
We use your information only to:
- generate your Report and email it to you;
- respond to your questions or requests;
- keep the Service secure, prevent abuse, and fix problems;
- improve the accuracy of the Service, using information that is aggregated or de-identified where practical; and
- comply with the law.
and, only if you opt in:
- send you our email newsletter (every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link and our mailing address); and
- send your name, email, and property address to selected local ADU contractors so they can contact you with a free quote (see Section 3).
We do not send you marketing emails, or pass your information to contractors, unless you check the matching optional box. Neither box is required to get your Report.
3. How information is disclosed
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not "share" it for cross-context behavioral advertising (as those terms are defined in the California Consumer Privacy Act). We have not done so in the past 12 months. We do not give your information to lenders, marketers, data brokers, or advertisers.
We disclose information only to:
-
Local ADU contractors — only if you opt in. If you check the optional "free quote" box, we send your name, email address, and property address to up to three independent local ADU contractors (for example, design-build firms or general contractors that build ADUs in your area) we have selected. We do not vet or endorse them; please check their license at www.cslb.ca.gov. We do this only at your direction, and only so they can contact you about a quote. We receive no payment from contractors for this. We require contractors to use your information only to respond to your request and not to sell it or pass it on. Once they receive it, each contractor's own privacy policy also applies. If you do not check the box, contractors receive nothing.
-
Service providers who help us run the Service, only as needed to perform their services for us and under terms that limit their use of the information. These include:
- website hosting and analytics: Vercel, including Vercel Web Analytics
- email delivery: Resend
- AI processing: used only when an AI API key is configured. In that case, the property address and the computed public facts are sent to the configured OpenAI-compatible provider (OpenAI at api.openai.com, unless a different endpoint is set) to draft a restatement of those facts. Your email address is never sent. When no key is configured, no AI provider receives your information.
- data storage/database: Turso (libSQL)
-
Legal and safety reasons: if required by law, subpoena, or court order, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of us, our users, or others.
-
A business transfer: if the Service is transferred to a business entity we form (such as an LLC) or to a successor, your information may transfer with it, subject to this Policy.
Withdrawing your consent
- Newsletter: click "unsubscribe" in any newsletter, or email hello@mycaliforniaadu.com. We will process it within 10 business days.
- Contractor quotes: email hello@mycaliforniaadu.com with the subject "Withdraw quote request." We will stop sending your information to any new contractors and will ask contractors who already received it to stop contacting you and delete it. We cannot recall information already sent, so you may also contact those contractors directly. Contractors who received your information are listed in your confirmation email.
Withdrawing either choice does not affect your Report or your use of the Service.
Notice about selling and sharing (CCPA)
- No sale. We do not sell personal information, and we have no actual knowledge of selling the information of anyone under 16. Sending your information to contractors when you specifically ask us to is a disclosure made at your direction; we receive nothing of value for it, so we do not treat it as a "sale."
- No "sharing." We do not disclose personal information for cross-context behavioral (targeted) advertising.
- Your right to opt out anyway. You can still tell us not to sell or share your information, now or in the future, by emailing hello@mycaliforniaadu.com with the subject "Do Not Sell or Share," or through a Global Privacy Control signal.
- Contractor marketing (California "Shine the Light," Civil Code § 1798.83). If you opt in to quotes, contractors may contact you about their services. You may ask us once per year, by emailing hello@mycaliforniaadu.com, which contractors received your information for that purpose in the prior calendar year.
(Attorney note: if contractors ever pay per lead or provide anything else of value, this disclosure is likely a CCPA "sale" requiring a "Do Not Sell or Share" link, updated notices, and possibly changes to the opt-in flow. Get attorney review before any payment starts.)
4. How long we keep information
Newsletter subscribers' emails are kept until you unsubscribe (we then keep only a suppression record so we don't email you again). We keep submissions — your address, email, name if given, and Report — and the related consent records for 12 months after your request, or until you ask us to delete them, whichever comes first. Consent logs are kept as long as needed to prove consent. Server logs are kept for 30–90 days. Backups roll over within 30 days. We may keep information longer to comply with the law or to resolve a dispute. After a retention period ends, we delete the information or de-identify it.
5. Your privacy rights (California)
We aim to follow the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (together, "CCPA"), even where the law may not strictly require it of a small, free service. If you are a California resident, you may ask us to:
- Know / access: tell you what personal information we have about you, where it came from, why we use it, and whom we disclosed it to, and give you a copy;
- Delete: delete personal information we collected from you, subject to limited legal exceptions;
- Correct: correct inaccurate personal information;
- Opt out of sale or sharing: we do not sell or share, but you may still make this request;
- Withdraw consent: withdraw your newsletter or contractor-quote opt-in at any time (see Section 3); and
- Limit use of sensitive personal information: we do not intentionally collect sensitive personal information.
We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.
We extend these same rights to all users, wherever they live.
How to make a request
- Email hello@mycaliforniaadu.com with the subject line "Privacy Request."
Tell us the email address you used. To protect you, we will verify the request — usually by confirming it from that same email address — before acting on it. You may use an authorized agent; we may ask for proof of the agent's authority. We will confirm receipt within 10 business days and respond within 45 days (we may extend once by another 45 days if needed, and will tell you why).
Deletion. When we delete your information, we also instruct our service providers to delete it, and we ask any contractors who received it through your quote request to delete it. We may keep a minimal record that you asked to be deleted so we can honor the request, and backups may take up to 30 days to roll over.
6. Categories of personal information (CCPA disclosure)
We collect the following categories, from you directly or from your device, for the purposes in Section 2:
| Category | Examples | Disclosed to |
|---|---|---|
| Identifiers | email address, name (opt-in only), IP address | Service providers; contractors (name and email, opt-in only) |
| Address / location-related | property address you enter (not your device's precise location) | Service providers (incl. AI provider); contractors (opt-in only) |
| Internet or network activity | basic technical log data | Service providers |
| Inferences | none | — |
Contractors receive information only when you direct us to, as described in Section 3.
We have not sold or shared any category of personal information.
7. Security
We use reasonable safeguards, such as encrypted connections (HTTPS) and access limited to the owner and necessary service providers. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee security. If we learn of a security breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you as required by law.
8. Children
The Service is meant for adults and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has submitted information, contact us and we will delete it.
9. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy. We will post the new version with a new "Last updated" date. If we make a material change — especially any change to selling or sharing, receiving payment from contractors, or using your information for new purposes — we will notify you before it takes effect and, where required, get your consent. Changes will not apply to information collected before the change without your consent where the law requires it.
